How to Optimize Image Selection and Placement

What sorts of images should I put in my story? How many? Where do they go? Here’s a primer.

Today's topic has about as many rules as the Wild West. At best, we can hope for an intuitive feel in selecting and producing images, maybe an artistic eye if we’re lucky, then we gotta shoot from the hip, all while wearing white hats so we don’t get sued.
