May I Be Your Personal Writing Coach?
Get a free editing and mentoring session with a paid Writer’s Guide subscription. Or hire me as your writing coach.
To everyone who is on the free subscription plan or has not yet subscribed: I hope you’re finding value in the Writer’s Guide. I have some news:
I’ve launched a personalized editing, coaching and mentoring service, with several options for dipping your toe or engaging in intensive mentoring to improve your non-fiction writing.
Every writer needs an editor. If you’re lucky enough, your editor is also a coach and a mentor, doing more than fixing typos and complaining about your run-on sentences or your failure to follow the style guide. A writing coach teaches you how to write better, mentors you on the craft, and imparts years of experience on best practices and tricks of the trade during hands-on editing sessions.
This is what I do. And I’d like to be your personal writing coach. There are several options.
To sample my mentoring, all you have to do is sign up today for a paid subscription to the Writer’s Guide, and I will arrange with you a free, individualized editing and coaching session. You’ll also gain access to all the current and future paid guides and essays.
In the complimentary editing session, I will edit an article of yours, anything up to 1,500 words or so, and give you valuable feedback—coaching and mentoring—that you can use to improve your skills beyond the one article. We’ll cover such things as headlines, structure, flow, style, tone and more. And we’ll do some back-and-forth to answer questions and make sure you take away valuable insights.
Am I any good?
“I’ve written two trade books and many op-eds, and yet have never received the type of detailed, constructive, and practical feedback for writing for the general public as I've received from Rob. His advice is spot on and my pieces are better for having received it.”
—Catherine Sanderson, psychology professor, keynote speaker, author, and writer

What I do
I help writers not just improve their non-fiction articles, but learn from the edits and suggestions in order to write better moving forward. My specialty is helping writers who have topical expertise or experience and need to improve their ability to communicate successfully with lay readers—to grow their mass-audience appeal.
This is not just about editing. This is serious coaching and mentoring. I’ll evaluate your strengths, your weaknesses, and help you make constructive steps toward more efficient, effective, successful writing.
See, in the Writer’s Guide, I share time-honored techniques to improve your writing, make it more engaging and accessible to lay readers (the mass audience). I do serious brain dumps of the stuff I’ve learned in 30-plus years as a journalist, editor and media executive.
But we can only do so much learning by reading about writing. We need to write, and then get an honest critique of our writing, and then our learnings to future articles.
You’ll also get…
Plus, as a paid subscriber, you’ll get full access to all Writer’s Guide articles, including these that are behind the paywall and more to come each month (click for free previews):
This is a limited-time offer. I hope to get so much busier than I already am that I have to end the offer soon and turn my full attention to what I love most: mentoring a whole new group of writers who want to invest real effort into improving their craft.
Are you ready to become a better writer?
Cheers,
Rob

He's helped me learn to spot the key idea in my work and guide me toward expressing it in a clear and compelling article. I especially appreciate the digestible advice and tips on the mechanics of non-fiction writing (things I've not been taught as an academic).
