One year ago this week, I launched the Writer’s Guide to share practical advice and insights I’ve learned about nonfiction article writing in roughly 35 years of writing, editing and managing media publications. I still write and edit daily, and I’m continually reminded of best practices, challenges, joys and frustrations, critical tips, and unique ways of approaching our craft. I share it all with you in this newsletter.
Now a bit of personal news: A year’s worth of actionable weekly posts—on everything from tops to bottoms and the artful flow of words in between—has inspired me to write a book that will bring it all together in one place. It’s looking like about 29 chapters. More to come as the book develops in coming weeks (months?). Meanwhile, to free up some time for that project…
I’m adjusting the monthly post pattern of the Writer’s Guide from 1 paid/3 free to 1 paid/1 free. The paid post will come out on the first Monday each month, and the free post will come out on the third Monday of each month (starting next week). I won’t pretend less is necessarily more, but I will continue to work my tail off to bring you helpful, usable writing advice and inspiration every month (and a reminder: There are some 52 pieces in the archives that never go out of style).
I will not complain if you level up to a paid subscription, or tell a friend about the Writer’s Guide. I invest a lot of time and energy into this newsletter, and I do it mostly for the love of the craft and the reward of giving back to the writing community. But I drink a lot of coffee, and coffee keeps getting more expensive, so every paid subscription helps me help you and other writers as we all continue improving. Either way, thank you for your support, and I look forward to continuing to serve you.
And this is pretty cool…
Catch me live on Medium Day
This Saturday, Aug. 17, I will be one of dozens (perhaps hundreds) of speakers at the online learning festival Medium Day 2024. I’ll be speaking about… no surprise…
How to Write Successful Health and Science Articles
My session will be 30 minutes, starting at 3:30 p.m. ET, with half of it devoted to live Q&A, so come with questions. You can register for Medium Day here (it’s free) and search now to find and bookmark my talk, or peruse the many others.
Cheers,
Rob
